Medications for Depression

Let us begin with the expected. You see a psychiatrist, stutter that you're sad, and the doctor immediately slings an SSRI in your face.

SSRIs

These are the most often prescribed antidepressants. It stands for serotonin reuptake inhibitors that are selective. This essentially indicates more serotonin. Numerous medications are classified as SSRIs. Zoloft is the most often given. SSRIs appear to have a success rate of around 40% to 60%. Unfortunately, I've encountered many people who attempt an SSRI and then discontinue medicine totally, despite the fact that there are so many other acceptable choices.
SNRIs

These medications now raise not just serotonin, but also norepinephrine. This should have an influence on one's energy, arousal, and attentiveness, among other things. Cymbalta and Effexor are two of the most well-known and effective antidepressants. Although we lack numbers, it is well established that SNRIs are more effective than SSRIs. However, it is conceivable that neither will work, and even then, you should not quit up. Deciding, "I want to die," is not an option.

Atypical Antidepressants

What helped for me were atypical antidepressants. Each drug in this class has a unique mechanism of action. I take Wellbutrin, which largely impacts dopamine rather than serotonin. As a result, it is classified as an atypical antidepressant. Each person's sadness is unique, and serotonin is certainly not the panacea. Occasionally, we must inquire for alternatives to SSRIs from our doctors due to their proclivity to prescribe just them. Certain individuals benefit from atypical antidepressants.

However, let us now speak more creatively. What if there was an alternative to antidepressants that may help you overcome your depression?

Adderall

Adderall is intended to aid a person with ADHD in being calm and attentive. That is excellent, but Adderall also gives some users with a mood and energy boost. I've heard of it having no discernible impact, but that appears to be the exception.

Gabapentin

Gabapentin is a medication that is used to treat nerve pain and seizures. Additionally, it is used off-label for anxiety. It acts largely by raising the brain's GABA concentrations. GABA has been shown to increase mood. This and Adderall have had a profound influence on my life in terms of mood.

Mood Stabilizers

Mood stabilizers are normally administered solely to persons diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, although regardless of how they are prescribed, they may aid with mood. Lithium is a prominent mood stabilizer.
